At the end of John Chapter 14 Jesus tells his disciples 'lets go from here' but then breaks out into a long, incredibly detailed speech about the true vine, the father (Yahweh) and how he operates, by pruning. He goes on to sum up the commandments stating to love one another as he loves us explaining that our fruit is given by him but is to be used to help us love one another as he loves us, even as he loved us by giving his life, and that his friends are those who do as he commands. Ultimately, those who he has appointed who abide in him will bear fruit, having a continual connection to the father, through Jesus, as he pointed out in his vine illustration earlier. Those with abiding fruit can ask anything of the father in Jesus' name, but this does not guarantee an answer or ask is granted, as Jesus was not able to escape death or have a substitute for his mission even though he asked (Matt. 26:39). Jesus goes on to talk about how much the world will hate him and us (those who believe and follow after) and that we would be persecuted, as he was even without cause. Though this is bleak, we have hope. In the last lines he tells his disciples of a helper who will come, a spirit of truth, who will guide them even though his time is drawing to a close. Jesus continues in Chapter 16: “I have said all these things to you to keep you from falling away. They will put you out of the synagogues. Indeed, the hour is coming when whoever kills you will think he is offering service to God. And they will do these things because they have not known the Father, nor me. But I have said these things to you, that when their hour comes you may remember that I told them to you. “I did not say these things to you from the beginning, because I was with you. John 16:1‭-‬4 ESV Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you. And when he comes, he will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment: concerning sin, because they do not believe in me; concerning righteousness, because I go to the Father, and you will see me no longer; concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged. John 16:7‭-‬11 ESV Yet again we see that Jesus is the doorway and the key to accessing the Father, having the Helper (Holy Spirit) and bearing fruit on your branch from the vine. We also see that someone else rules this world, but it's not Jesus, which is the entire reason for Jesus. When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. He will glorify me, for he will take what is mine and declare it to you. All that the Father has is mine; therefore I said that he will take what is mine and declare it to you. John 16:13‭-‬15 ESV Why aren't we living in the fullness promised to us? We either haven't accessed it yet, received it yet or recognized it yet, all of which are just a part of the whole and shunt off by our lack of belief and obedience.
