At the sermon on the mount, Jesus had so much to say on so many topics from anger to lust, retaliation to loving enemies, but salt and light stick out to me. Does salt choose the food or the person using it? Does light tell you where it needs to go or how it's going to shine? These questions sound ridiculous but describe our ideal of a "calling" that isn't realistic. We're not always as important as we think, as a single light or grain of salt can only do so much, but we're simultaneously more important than we can imagine, as a collective, used where we're needed and desired by God and others, not necessarily where we want to be individually. If we see there's power in numbers, we have to be careful not to be solely consumed by quantity. No one wants to have their meal smothered in salt, or have every square inch of their house covered in lights. The same way, we must allow God to strategically place us where we're needed, not by our own desires, but by the Holy Spirit. If we choose our timing and location, how do we know we've chosen correctly? Light and salt are always used when and where needed the most, not where there's a surplus of the same. If we wait to be used when and how we want, we're doomed to be tossed aside, or maybe worse, blend in rather than enhance. Shine and enhance wherever you are, pray to be used and you will be lead. “You are the salt of the earth, but if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltiness be restored? It is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trampled under people’s feet. “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven. Matthew 5:13‭-‬16 ESV
